Vast, dangerous and thrilling - could there be a better subject for a movie than the sea? Ever since the earliest days of the movies, many of the very greatest have been set on the ocean wave. Some have upstanding navy men as their heroes, while others have centred on more colourful characters, but all of them share the same knack of battling the briny in spectacular fashion. Taking you from the epic pursuit of Moby Dick to the fun and mayhem of Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End, this FILM CLUB season will have you on the edge of your seat - and probably grateful to be on dry land!
Suggested pairs:
Watch the 1956 adaptation of the classic tale Moby Dick and then director Steven Spielberg's Jaws, and see if the two movies remind you of one another!
For two versions of what a life at sea would have been like 200 years ago, try watching 1963's Billy Budd followed by Master and Commander (made 40 years later but set in the same era), starring Russell Crowe as Captain Jack Aubrey.
Talking points:
Does the life of an 19th century sailor portrayed in of Master and Commander seem exciting and adventurous, or dull and unpleasant?
Did the underwater scenes of The Abyss make you want to explore beneath the sea?
GUIDANCE:
Several of the films featured here depicting naval life contain scenes that a very young audience may find disturbing, although older viewers should be comfortable with them, particularly if those scenes are put in a historical context.
