Among the many wonderful things about movies, maybe one of the very greatest is its ability to not just keep up with our imaginations – it can surpass them, showing us sights we could have never dreamed of beforehand. While you may be sitting in a dull classroom on a wet Wednesday, a movie can take you anywhere you might want to go – even if that’s a world of strange new lands, ancient curses and mystical powers.
So it’s a pleasure for FilmClub to present this season of great Fantasy movies. It’s one which ranges from the very latest blockbusters (Prince Caspian, the second movie in The Chronicles of Narnia series, which will be at cinemas later in the term) through recent classics like The Bridge to Terabithia, all the way back to the early 1980s and movies like the incredibly imaginative (and very funny) Time Bandits. But whether they’re set among ancient spirits in a Japanese “bath-house”, in a run-down circus on the English seaside, or in a 19th century parallel world complete with talking polar bears (and believe it or not, all of these are represented here!), we think you’ll find yourself swept away by the movies that we’ve collected here.
SUGGESTED PAIR
Why not team up Labyrinth, a favourite from the 1980s which helped kick-start today’s widespread love of Fantasy, with a recent smash hit like Stardust?
TALKING POINTS
Do you prefer Fantasy movies to more “realistic” stories – and if you do, why?
What’s the most incredible sight you’ve ever seen in a Fantasy movie? Can you imagine anything even more amazing yourself that you’ve never seen in a movie but would like to?
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN WILL BE SHOWING AT CINEMAS TOWARDS THE END OF THE SUMMER TERM, AND WE HOPE THAT YOU’LL CHOOSE TO EXPERIENCE IT ON THE BIG-SCREEN. AS SOON AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE ON DVD, FILM CLUB WILL BE OFFERING OUR MEMBERS TO CHANCE TO WATCH IT IF THROUGH US.
