Films by season & age - Terrorism (Ages 15-18)
Seasons are a great way to explore different ideas through watching a group of films. Why not try watching all the films in a season and make some time for discussion. Topics and discussion points are included.
- Arlington Road (15)
- Deja Vu (12)
- Munich (15)
- One Day In September (15)
- Syriana (15)
- The Wind That Shakes The Barley (15)
- Twelve Monkeys (15)
- United 93 (15)
A subject that dominates the headlines and shapes our everyday reality - the Film Club season of films related to terrorism aims to deepen both the love of movies, and understanding of this most fraught and sensitive of issues.
Suggested pair:
It may be particularly interesting to have back-to-back screenings of a fictional portrait of terrorism in, for instance, Twelve Monkeys or Arlington Road, with the documentary of the massacre at the 1972 Olympics, One Day In September. Alternatively, One Day In September could be shown alongside Munich - director Steven Spielberg's account of what happened following the events portrayed in the documentary.
Talking points:
Are the films here too one-sided? Did you feel they were fair-minded in the way they presented both terrorism and the havoc it causes?
Did you feel the films gave you any idea as to why people become terrorists?
Did watching one of the historical films in this season (The Wind That Shakes The Barley, One Day in September or Munich) affect the way you see terrorism in the present day?
Guidance:
Although the films in this season are made by intelligent and responsible film-makers, their subject matter can obviously raise distressing issues, and all contain scenes of violence. Putting the issues involved into context and taking care to forewarn sensitive viewers might be especially worthwhile in watching those films either portraying real events in documentary form (One Day in September), or very closely based on them (United 93).
