Films by season & age - Tales of Ice and Snow (Ages 8-12)

Seasons are a great way to explore different ideas through watching a group of films. Why not try watching all the films in a season and make some time for discussion. Topics and discussion points are included.

Take a look outside the window during the summer term, and the chances are the sun will be shining. But do you feel a slight chill in the air even while everyone else looks sweltering? Don’t worry – that’ll just be the effects of FilmClub’s Tales of Ice and Snow season, a collection of great movies devoted to all things frozen and snow-covered. Of course, as you probably know, at the present time both the earth’s North and South Poles are under threat rom the effects of climate change. That only makes the movies presented here so much more powerful in their portrait of a world that you might not want to get lost in – but which is home to some of the most incredible sights on the face of the planet. In this FilmClub season, you’ll see danger, bravery and jaw-dropping beauty all existing side by side – just be sure to bring a scarf and gloves!

SUGGESTED PAIR

Both An Arctic Tale and March of the Penguins show what life is like for those hardy birds and animals that make their home in the frozen lands of the North and South Pole. Scott of the Antarctic deals with the hardship faced by man as he tries to come to terms with the harsh reality of the South Pole – but Elf shows an altogether lighter side of life amid the deep freeze!

TALKING POINTS

What do you think your day-to-day life would be like if you lived in either the Arctic or Antarctica? Do the films in this season make you want to go to somewhere permanently snowy and frozen? Or are you happier just watching those places on-screen?
