Films by season & age - Rhythms of the Street (Ages 15-18)

Seasons are a great way to explore different ideas through watching a group of films. Why not try watching all the films in a season and make some time for discussion. Topics and discussion points are included.

Turn on the TV these days, and you can hardly move for programmes that feature dancing celebrities. But for many people, their experience of dance is a little different from that so often seen on the small-screen. Rather than the ballroom flamboyance of “Strictly Come Dancing,”, dance in many parts of the UK evolves on the streets as a means of selfexpression. Some of the time, the mainstream will pick up on a style and turn it into a phenomenon – and at other times, someone who gets started on the street or in a club will end up becoming a professional dancer in a more formal environment.

Both these experiences are covered in this FilmClub season devoted not just to dance – but to the dance that starts out on the street, beginning with one person busting out on a corner or in a club, and ending up as a sensation. It’s a season that takes us from the toughest areas of Los Angeles to the Germany of the 1930s on to Jamaica and at least one small mining town in the north of England – with each of these very different locations united by the spirit of dance.

Breakdance - The Movie and Rize both showcase dance movements which became internationally popular after starting out on the streets of American cities.

Mad Hot Ballroom and Billy Elliott each portray ordinary kids channelling their love of rhythm into formal dancing.
