Films by season & age - Mighty Mice And Rockin Rats (Ages 5-8)
Seasons are a great way to explore different ideas through watching a group of films. Why not try watching all the films in a season and make some time for discussion. Topics and discussion points are included.
They spend most of their time trying to hide from us while at the same time living among us – and although nervous types might be scared at the sight of them, we’re sure you’re not nearly so squeamish. Who or what are we talking about? Mice, of course – and their closerelations, rats. Because both animals take starring roles in this FilmClub season dedicated to all things furry, twitchy nosed and fleet of foot.
But you’ll be pleased to know that in most of the great movies on offer here, the little critters are trying to help us – for instance in the delightful Ratatouille, in which a rat named Remy helps a hopeless chef fulfil his dreams. And even when they’re not working alongside us, they’re only trying to make a home for themselves – take the tiny hero of Mousehunt, who only wants to stay in the old ramshackle house he’s always lived in, but which is under threat from a pair of brothers with their eyes on the money from selling the place!
SUGGESTED PAIR
In Stuart Little, a mouse lives among a human family in New York City – while in The Secret of Nimh, a field mouse turns to a group of rats to protect her home from a farmer’s plough.
GUIDANCE
Very young viewers may find some of the more slapstick and/or violent scenes in Mousehunt upsetting, while the scenes of The Witches where the witches themselves reveal their “true selves” may also be disturbing for audiences in Year 1 and 2.
