Films by season & age - Just Great Movies for ages 8-12

Seasons are a great way to explore different ideas through watching a group of films. Why not try watching all the films in a season and make some time for discussion. Topics and discussion points are included.

Not every great move that FILM CLUB offers has to be linked to another by subject matter - some we just think you should see because they're incredible films. So here are six of what we consider to be the best.

From the world of animation, we present The Incredibles, one of the freshest and most inventive movies in years. Lending a touch of the gothic to FILM CLUB is the wonderful The Nightmare Before Christmas. Meanwhile, sticking with dark humour but expertly mixing animation and live action is a delicious adaptation of Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach.

Venturing back out in the "real world", we hope to offer three movies that are every bit as enjoyable - Australia's moving and thought-provoking Rabbit-Proof Fence, the much-loved sing-along Bugsy Malone and, last but not least, Steven Spielberg's timeless tale of aliens coming to earth, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Talking points

  • Would Bugsy Malone have been as much fun if the cast was made up of adults?
  • Would you rather live in The Nightmare Before Christmas' Halloween Town or Christmas Town?
  • Why do you think it's so unusual to see a hopeful movie about aliens like Close Encounters of the Third Kind?
