Films by season & age - Friendship (Ages 15-18)

Seasons are a great way to explore different ideas through watching a group of films. Why not try watching all the films in a season and make some time for discussion. Topics and discussion points are included.

Movies about friendship can be among the most powerful ever made - making us feel the joy when a joke is shared, and the hurt when a confidence is betrayed. The films in this Film Club season present friendship in its most authentic sense - one where disappointment and anger will inevitably rear their ugly heads, but where the bond between true friends is strong enough to survive anyway.

For anyone watching, the movies here will provoke reflections on their own friendship - particularly as friendships between young people are the subject of three of the films (A Room For Romeo Brass, My Summer of Love and Stand by Me).

Suggested pair:

Why not follow a screening of A Room for Romeo Brass, with its falling-out between two 12 year olds, with one of Last Orders, a portrait of old friends at the other end of their lives?

Talking points:

Did anything that went on between the friends in any of these movies remind you of a situation that you've been in?

Do you think friendship changes as you get older?

When the friends argued or fell out, did you find yourself taking sides, or did the whole thing seem pointless?

Guidance:

A Room for Romeo Brass features a brief scene of a violent assault.
