- Whisky Galore (PG)
Ask a lot of people about Scottish film, and they might tell you about Braveheart – a famous “Scottish” movie made by and starring the Australian-American actor-director Mel Gibson, much of which was actually shot in Ireland! But the truth is that Scotland’s had a long and glorious history of producing its own movies – films that are among some of the best (and best-loved) classics the British movie business has ever created.
In this FilmClub season, we take the chance to celebrate those movies – going all the way back to the 1930s, with the classic British thriller The 39 Steps (much of which was shot in the Highlands), before we bring ourselves back to the present day with the touching family drama Dear Frankie. And along the way, we’ll be offering a selection of films that we hope you’ll agree prove Scotland has a prestigious place in movie history all of its own!
SUGGESTED PAIR
For two equally well-loved comedies which show two very different areas of Scotland in two very different eras, why not watch Whisky Galore – set on a Hebridean island just after World War II – and Gregory’s Girl, which takes place in a “new town” in the early 1980s?
TALKING POINTS
Do you think the films shown here presented a realistic view of Scotland?
If you were going to make a movie in Scotland now, whereabouts would you set it and what kind of story would it be?
