Sometimes a source of comfort and joy, but sometimes one of pure aggravation, most of us could probably tell a story or two about our families. As such, FILM CLUB presents this season devoted to films about family life. Although many of the movies in the season will certainly make you laugh, they will also give you plenty of food for thought, with families in difficult situations doing their best to stay together and to look out for one another -even while they're driving each other up the wall.
Suggested pair:
Little Miss Sunshine and The Pursuit of Happyness both show families trying to get by in troubled financial circumstances - yet with a hard-earned mood of optimism.
Talking points:
Aside from Olive, which of the family members in Little Miss Sunshine did you like the most? Which of them reminded you most of yourself? Did your feelings about them change during the film?
When you were watching The Pursuit of Happyness, did you wonder whether everything that happened to Chris in the film really also took place in real life? (It did!)
Were you surprised at the way Cynthia reacted when she was told of Hortense's secret in Secrets and Lies?
Guidance:
About a Boy features of scene involving suicide that younger viewers may find disturbing. Volver contains brief instances of nudity and sex.
