Films by season & age - Anthony Minghella (Ages 15-18)

Seasons are a great way to explore different ideas through watching a group of films. Why not try watching all the films in a season and make some time for discussion. Topics and discussion points are included.

We were all saddened to hear of the tragic death of director Anthony Minghella this week. Anthony was one of the earliest supporters of Filmclub and a good friend to many of us. For almost 20 years Anthony has been one of the brightest talents in the British movie industry, and an inspiration for others working in it - as well as a genuinely warm-hearted character - loved my many and admired by all.

After working on the hugely popular BBC TV school series Grange Hill during the 1980s. Anthony made his debut as a movie director in 1990 with the romantic comedy Truly, Madly, Deeply. he was often quoted as saying that he expected the movie to meet a "low-key" response - but instead, it proved a massive success, instantly making his name as one of the UK's most promising film-makers. Just a few years later (1996) he made The English Patient - a story of mystery and romance that captivated audiences around the world, and was justly rewarded with an amazing haul of nine Oscars, including Best Film, with Anthony himself being named Best Director.

In the years that followed, Anthony channelled his energy and creativity into a number of different areas, Producing other people's films, directing operas on the stage, acting as chairman of the BFI (British Film Institute), and supporting his beloved Portsmouth FC. But the marvellous films kept coming too, as his imagination took in stories of love, war, obsession, and modern life in all its complex glory.

Here, in tribute to Anthony, we present a FilmClub season dedicated to his work. We will miss him - truly madly and deeply - but we will at least have these fantastic movies forever.
