Although director Jean Vigo died at the age of 29 having made just four films he is unquestionably one of the greatest names of French cinema. Zéro de Conduite (“Zero for Conduct”) is his boisterous satire of a students' revolt in a repressive boarding school that was originally banned on its release for appearing to attack the French authorities. Since then, however, it’s become acknowledged as a classic in its own right, as well as a film that has had a huge and lasting influence over generations of movie-makers since.
