Anyone with brothers or sisters will be able to relate to the adult siblings in this intimate and poignant drama. As it is for many of us, their relationship is more than a little complex, a situation that’s intensified by the fact that single mother Sammy hasn’t seen her drifter brother Terry in quite some time before he suddenly turns up to wreak havoc on her stable, small-town life. Complicating matters is Sammy’s eight-year-old son Rudy - who desperately needs a father figure but is immediately suspicious of his wayward uncle’s intentions.

Fascinating facts
This was Rory Culkin's first major movie role. Lonergan was impressed on the whole with his acting ability, but had such a difficult time getting him to laugh or even smile on camera that he had another member of cast tickle him a few times.
The scene in You Can Count On Me in which Rudy walks home from school in the rain was created by the local fire department spraying a hose from their highest ladder.
