Released in what was a vintage year for the famous “Ealing comedies” (Passport to Pimlico and Kind Hearts and Coronets also came out in 1949), this near-perfect film is irreverent, anti-authoritarian and utterly hilarious – all the qualities that made Ealing a byword for the best in British comedy. The effects of World War II have shrunk the whisky ration to nothing on the far-flung Scottish island of Todday - so when a supply ship carrying 50,000 cases is wrecked, the locals decide to take matters into their own hands…
