Now, almost all of us are aware of the reality of climate change, and the fact that rising sea levels may one day leave much of what we now use as habitable land underwater. Back in the 1990s, however, such ideas were still far from universally accepted – which makes the foresight of Waterworld all the more impressive. Set in a not-so-very-distant future, it tells the tale of “The Mariner”, a lone sailor on an Earth almost entirely consumed by floods, who has physically adapted to this new environment – but whose life is endangered by roving bands of pirates known as “smokers”. But can The Mariner ever reach the fabled “Dry Land”? Waterworld was not a success at box offices when it first came out, but now stands as a powerful and entertaining action movie with a smart eco-conscious twist.

Fascinating facts
Prior to 'Titanic' (1997), this was the most expensive movie ever produced. Rumors abound that director Kevin Reynolds walked off the set with two weeks of filming left, and Kevin Costner completed the film.
The ship used by the Smokers in Waterworld is the “Exxon Valdez” - a real oil tanker that was involved in one of the worst environmental disasters in history when it ran aground on the coast of Alaska in 1989, and spilled over 11 million gallons of oil into the ocean.
