India, 1938. Long before she even reaches her teens, Chuyia has already been married off to an adult man – but without having any memory that the marriage even took place, she is told that her husband has died. In line with Hindu tradition at the time, she is forced to move to an “ashram” - a home for widows, where women have to spend the rest of their lives if the husbands pass away, atoning for the wrongdoings which much of society believes must have caused their death. There, she finds herself among a group of women in the same position as her – but will they all really have to see out their days in such a grim situation?

Fascinating facts

Third film in Deepa Mehta's "elemental trilogy," which began with 'Fire' (1996) and continued with 'Earth' (1998). George Lucas took out a full-page ad in "Variety" to support Deepa Mehta in her struggle to make this film when Indian authorities made clear their intentions to shut the production down.

Water was originally intended to be made in India - but on the day before the shoot was scheduled to begin, protesters who were unhappy at what they believed the film to be saying about Hinduism burned down the set. The film was then delayed for four years while financing was re-arranged, and was eventually shot in Sri Lanka.
