If you’ve got any relatives who have ever done amateur dramatics, you’ll find Waiting For Guffman particularly funny – and even if you haven’t, you’ll still be howling with laughter at this fantastic comedy. It’s a spoof documentary which focuses on a small American town where some of the more extrovert residents are putting on a musical. There are bruised egos and delusions of grandeur all over the place from the start - and when the organiser of the show learns that a famous Broadway producer is going to be attending, it tips the whole cast over the edge. This a laugh-out-loud modern classic that draws a lot of its humour from the fact its characters and story could - just about - be real.

Fascinating facts
The title is a play on the title of Samuel Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot'. The plots also share enough similarities so that a knowledge of 'Godot' will reveal things about 'Guffman'.
As with other comedies made by the same team of actors - like This is Spinal Tap and Best in Show - almost all the dialogue in Waiting for Guffman was improvised.
