Compared with today, 1950s Britain could have been a different planet. Emotionally and sexually repressed, it was a class-divided country where personal problems remained private and a nice cuppa was often seen as the answer to all evils. This poignant and powerful drama meticulously recreates this post-war era through the experiences of working class Vera Drake, a benevolent though naïve cleaning lady who secretly performs backstreet abortions for desperate girls. She sees herself as simply lending a helping hand - but when one of her clients almost dies, Vera’s illegal actions tragically backfire.

Fascinating facts
Filmed with no script, the film went on to be nominated for Best Original Screenplay for 2005 Oscar. Mike Leigh said that he "had to prepare the screenplay so it can be sent out to academy members. But actually the screenplay that was nominated doesn't exist. The film is the screenplay."
Vera Drake was nominated for Best Original Screenplay in the 2005 Oscars, even though it was actually filmed without a script, using improvisation.
