Feisty 19th-century heroine Becky Sharp is an irrepressible opportunist. A poor orphan turned social climber, she’s constantly searching for ways to improve her standing. During an era when class status means everything, Becky manipulates hearts without conscience, attempting to get hitched to her genteel best friend’s brother before marrying into the respectable Crawley clan and finally finding a wealthy patron in the Marquess of Steyne. Adapted from the novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, this fresh and frothy confection is well acted and witty, with handsome visuals enriched by a dash of Hollywood colour.

Fascinating facts
After asking Reese Witherspoon to get pregnant for the role (as a joke, because she thought Reese was too thin), Mira Nair was delighted when Witherspoon announced she was expecting after all.
Natasha Little who plays Lady Jane Sheepshanks actually starred as the lead character Becky Sharp in a 1998 TV mini-series version of Vanity Fair.
