Many historical epics are long, dry affairs – but Underground is anything but dull. An amazing portrait of the Eastern European country that was once known as Yugoslavia, the story begins in 1941, with the Yugoslav capital of Belgrade about to be invaded by the Nazis – convincing friends Blacky and Marko that they must take drastic action to save themselves and their loved ones. Later, the story jumps ahead 20 years to the time of the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union – but where deception has ruined Blacky and Marko’s friendship. Finally, the film transports us to the early 1990s, and the horrific civil war that would see Yugoslavia break up into more than half a dozen states. Passionate, occasionally hilarious and always wildly imaginative, Underground manages to span 50 years of history without ever dragging, and to deal with the tragedies of that time without becoming mired in misery.
