In April 1912, the largest and most luxurious passenger ship in history set sail on its first ever voyage from Southampton to New York - only to hit an iceberg just four days later and sink in the frozen waters of the Atlantic. This tragic story is at the centre of Titanic (the name of the ship itself) - and the movie is almost as huge and awe-inspiring as its subject, focusing on an illicit on-board romance between poor stowaway Jack Dawson and the wealthy Rose DeWitt (played by Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet).

I am one of a great minority that did not like the film Titanic. I was disappointed to see that it focused more on a love story than the actual tragedy of the situation. You see, the main point of the film is about two people, the woman with a good name and the man who is very poor and got on to the ship with a very lucky poker hand. It focused on their impossible love and snobby family members that forbid their relationship. Of course, most people aren’t fussed by a bit of romance (including me, I admit), but I just found myself thinking about how it was one of those glossy romances with two people that made puppy dog eyes at each other.
On the other hand, as far as I know the statistics for all the deaths were correct. The were also very honest about how people on the ship were so shockingly predjudiced when it came to loading people on the lifeboats. They crammed working class in like sardines and yet the richer folk had bigger boats with only about 17 people on them, and I respect how honest they were with all that.
However, many people I know were in tears at the end of the film and yet I found myself thinking “oh please.” I am sick of having to watch all these high budget films with the fake tears and the perfect sence of dress-and god forbid the should have a hair out of place! The tradgedy of this is quite genuine, I admit-but if you’re not one for romance then steer clear!

I love the titanic film. it is really romantic. I would rather had lived through the titanic than live through the war. I really enjoyed this film and the way they are in love is so emotional. I completely recomend this film.

Fascinating facts

At $250 million, the movie cost more than the Titanic itself. The cost to construct the ship in 1910-1912 was £1.5 million, equivalent to $7.5 million at the time and about $120 to $150 million in 1997 dollars.

Most of the decor on the ship - from the carpet to the chandeliers - was reconstructed by, or under the supervision of, the original companies which furnished the Titanic
