The classic Wages of Fear is the perfect illustration that sometimes in movie-making, the story itself is not the most important thing – it’s how you tell it that makes a great film. For instance, on paper the first half of the movie is simply about a group of bored, hard-drinking men sitting around in a small town in South America – but all the time, we’re getting to know the characters and the tension is slowly building. Then, in the second half of the film, two of them set off driving trucks packed with nitroglycerin on a rocky, mountainous route knowing that any bump could blow them to pieces – but compelled to keep going by the promise of a stack of cash at the end of it. Simple but absolutely perfect in its execution, this is a nerve-shreddingly brilliant movie.
