A shocking but powerful film about the darker side of teenage life. Although The United States of Leland concerns a tragic case of murder, there is no mystery as to the identity of the killer – a troubled 16 year old by the name of Leland P. Fitzgerald. But the reasons that he committed such a terrible act are far less clear – partly because Leland, the son of a famous author, seems to be a good-hearted if unsettled kid, and partly because he himself can’t remember anything about the incident. This a very hard-hitting story that is recommended only for FILMCLUB’s oldest members – but it’s also a fine movie, with a haunting central performance from Ryan Gosling as Leland.
