Ten-year-old Fiona’s family is a little different from most. According to her relatives living on the Irish coast, some of their ancestors were “Selkies” – able to switch between being seals and humans. This might explain why Fiona’s brother went missing when he was a baby, and why Roan Inish – the “island of the seals” – is so important to them. Fiona decides to explore Roan Inish and see if she can make sense of the legends. A beautiful, sweet-natured movie that is never too cute for its own good.

Fascinating facts
Filming on location in Ireland meant that the production of The Secret of Roan Inish suffered from the harsh weather, and some of the actors were actually in danger during storms. “"You try not to kill your actors early in the shoot," director John Sayles said about one incident.
