A charming romantic comedy from a filmmaker – the acclaimed John Ford – perhaps best known for his sombre Westerns. Shot on location in Ireland, the film tells the tale of Sean Thornton who has returned from America to reclaim his homestead and escape his past – but who soon has his head turned by a beautiful local woman. The director considered this a personal favourite, and it’s certainly a hugely likeable movie.

Fascinating facts

The exterior of “Cohan’s pub” in The Quiet Man was actually a grocers’ shop in Cong, County Mayo, with the interior being shot in Hollywood using sets and props. In 2004, however, locals in Cong began shipping over those props to fully re-create the pub inside the original building.
