The lush Amazon Rainforest forms the backdrop to a tale of compassion and violence set in the 18th century which still resonates today. While Spain and Portugal fight bitterly over territory rights to South America, the native Indians find unlikely support in Jesuit priest Father Gabriel and slave trader-turned-priest Rodrigo Mendoza. A stony-faced Cardinal is dispatched from Rome to judge whether or not these Missions should survive - and his judgement has haunting consequences.

Fascinating facts

Most of the crew of The Mission became ill with dysentery while filming in the Amazon – the movie’s star Robert De Niro was one of the few involved in the project who remained in good health.

Many of the people who played the natives were actual native South Americans who spoke little English. They were given free reign to say whatever lines they wanted, and it is rumored that in a couple scenes they're actually cursing up a storm.
