This follow-up to British director Terence Davies’ Distant Voices, Still Lives is a powerful and poetic portrait of one boy’s life as he grows up in the Liverpool of the 1950s. The family of 11-year-old Bud don’t have much money, and he also has a tough time at the Catholic school where he is bullied by the other pupils and mistreated by the teachers. But he does find a refuge in the “picture shows” (the movies) – and using snippets of dialogue from such classic films of the time as The Ladykillers and The Magnificent Ambersons, The Long Day Closes becomes a beautiful and haunting tribute to the wonders of film as seen from a child’s point of view.
