The story of a scientist driven mad by an invisibility potion, this is a ground-breaking adaptation of the classic story by writer HG Wells. The film follows the increasingly demented Jack Griffin (played by star Claude Rains in his film debut) on a rampage through an English village as he searches for a cure for the invisibility he himself has created. The police, Griffin's girlfriend, and his fellow scientists race to capture the Invisible Man – and the results, while often imitated, have never been bettered.

Fascinating facts

In order to achieve the effect that Claude Rains wasn't there when his character took off the bandages, the director had Rains dressed completely in black velvet and filmed him in front of a black velvet background.

Some of the groundbreaking visual effects used in The Invisible Man included dressing star Claude Rains in a suit made entirely of black velvet, then shooting him against a black velvet backdrop. The suit, which was very constricting, was a constant problem for Rains, who suffered from claustrophobia.
