Evergreen World War II escape drama set in a German prisoner-of-war camp, featuring a large cast of famous actors playing Allied troops. Each of them is desperate to get out - but will their relentless tunnelling help them get back to Britain? A curious mixture of bleak historical fact, optimism and good humour, all complete with perhaps the catchiest theme tune ever written!

THE GREAT ESCAPE

THIS FILM IS AMAZING! IT IS BY FAR MY FAVOURITE EVER FILM, I OWN IT ON DVD AND I MUST HAVE SEEN IT A THOUSAND TIMES YET EVERYTIME I WATCH IT I STILL REALLY ENJOY IT! A REAL CLASSIC.

The film (a true story) is set in 1943 in Stalag Luft III, a WWII German prisoner of war camp. It is about a group of allied troops who are desperate to escape from the camp and try to do this in many ways. The focus of the film is three huge tunnels which the prisoners dig as a means of escape. The actors in this film are just brilliant especially my personal favourites Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough. The film has loads of great characters in it that you feel you get to know personally throughout the film. They include:
Big X
Hilts - the cooler king
Ives - the mole
Henly - the scrounger
Blythe - the forger
Not to mention the many ‘tunnel kings’.

The theme music is now world famous. I love this film and I would highly reccommend it anyone. Go and watch it now! If I could give this star more than 5 stars I most definately would. An amazing film.

Fascinating facts

Actor Donald Pleasance, who plays Lieutenant Blythe in The Great Escape, had actually been shot down and held in a German prisoner of war camp while serving as a RAF pilot during World War II.

Steve McQueen strings a wire across the road to obtain a motorcycle, he then plays the german motorcyclist who hits the wire.
