Graham Greene was one of Britain’s greatest writers of the 20th Century, and betrayal was one of the key themes of his books and film scripts. The pain, confusion and mixed motives that lead to it are perfectly captured in this drama about the young son of a foreign ambassador who hero-worships the family butler – and then turns against him. The title tells you how things are going to end up, but this brilliantly worked, small-scale film is a superb exploration of how people hurt the ones they love.

In order to get the right expression on the face of the boy looking at his hero in The Fallen Idol, the eight-year-old star Bobby Henrey was actually filmed while watching a magician.
