180 mins
Year produced:
1959
Director:
George Stevens
Cast:
Millie Perkins
Joseph Schildkraut
Shelley Winters

A wonderful screen version of one of the most moving true stories to emerge from World War II – about a young Jewish girl, Anne, and her family who are forced to hide from the Nazis for two years in a claustrophobic attic in occupied Amsterdam. Despite having no contact with the outside world, and virtually no privacy, the Franks try to go about their lives as best they can, while hoping for Holland to be liberated by the Allies. Although Anne’s story is often distressing for audiences, it’s a hugely important story of a normal girl forced to face the grim realities of war and racial hatred – but never allowing herself to lose her sense of optimism.

It was a good film and was very scary in places. I think children under 7 would be find it to scary to watch. It is very educational and would be good to watch if doing a World War Two. I would probaly watch this film again by choice as I enjoyed most of it. I am giving it a 4 star rating as I think the ending could have been a bit more detailed. I also think it was abit to long and people got restles towards the end because of this. I have also never seen a black and white fim before so I enjoyed the expirience. It was good as it is a true story and it makes you relise how lucky you are to live now instead of then, it would have been awful.

I liked this film because it is a true story. It is also in black and white and I haven’t seen many black and white films. I didn’t understand the ending, but overall it was very good.

Fascinating facts

Shelley Winters had to gain 25 pounds for the role of Mrs Van Daan, she then had to lose 15 of it during production.
