At first, when Steven Kovacs breaks up with his girlfriend and moves into a plush but lonely bachelor pad, he’s grateful for the friendship of Chip Douglas, the TV repair-man who illegally fixes him up with free cable. But soon, Steven begins to realise that Chip is needy, and lacks any boundaries – and that his obsession with old TV shows masks a much more serious personality problem. A much darker kind of comedy than fans of star Jim Carrey were used to when it first came out, the hilarious but hard-edged Cable Guy has since become a true cult favourite.

Fascinating facts

During filming of the scene in which the Cable Guy (Jim Carrey) plays basketball, it was discovered that Carrey could barely dribble a basketball, much less make a basket. Director Ben Stiller had Carrey mime the action without a ball and visual effects technicians added the basketball in postproduction.

Jim Carrey improvised heavily during a number of his scenes in The Cable Guy – when Chip and Steven are at the restaurant Medieval Times, Carrey’s co-star Matthew Broderick had to have the camera directed away from him in case he burst out laughing.
