Some very big claims have been made for this film over the years - and it lives up to all of them. Often resembling a documentary, it’s a thorough recreation of the ruthless, bloody conflict that took place during the 1950s between Algerian militants and French colonial forces. While there’s no doubt about which side the filmmakers were on, the result brilliantly explores the logic that motivated both groups, and is a great thrill-rush of a movie into the bargain.

US generals watched the film during the Iraq conflict to try to avoid the mistakes made by the French in Algeria.
