Most of us have dreamed of running away – but for the characters in this 19th-century tale, adapted from Mark Twain’s classic novel, the concepts of freedom and escape have a huge significance. Huck is an outcast white boy who flees his unhappy home and sets off down the Mississippi River, accompanied by a fugitive black slave. With its message about equality and justice accompanied by humour and adventure, this is a story that has entranced audiences for generations – just as it will no doubt continue to.

Huck Finn was a very good movie with lots of action and excitement. It was really funny. I thought it was goign to be boring at the start because of the music, but when we watched it, it was good. My favourite bit was when I thought the black guy was going to get hung and Huck got shot and I thought they were going to die.

Fascinating facts

Playing Huck Finn was one of Elijah Wood’s first screen jobs – the Lord of the Rings star was only 12 at the time the film was made.

Tom Sawyer features only briefly in the film despite being a major character in the book.
