"Wake up, godammit!" is the on-air rallying cry of livewire African-American DJ Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene in this funny, funky biopic. Charismatic former jailbird Petey motormouths his way on to the radio in mid-60s Washington DC – and soon his profane but passionate style becomes essential listening as he dares to say just what he thinks in what are turbulent, racially-unjust times. Don Cheadle is suitably explosive as Petey, contrasting well with “straight man” station exec Chiwetel Ejiofor – and doesn't forget his day job as he spins some classic tunes too.
