Woody Allen's “mockumentary” about a lovably rogue-ish 1930s jazz guitarist by the name of Emmet Ray is a personal tribute to an inspirational period of musical history. Star Sean Penn brings his usual intensity to the role of the heavy-boozing ladies’ man Ray, but it might just be his co-star Samantha Morton who stays in your memory longest – delivering a fantastically sweet-natured performance as his mute, long-suffering partner Hattie.
Fascinating facts
The song “Sweet and Low-Down” by jazz composer George Gershwin actually appears on the soundtrack to another Woody  Allen film, 1979’s Manhattan.
