Generally speaking, being hit by lightning is never a good idea – but for Robot Number 5, a product of a secret military programme, it’s the start of a whole new life. Having been designed as a terrifying killing machine for use in wartime, he’s suddenly blessed with a sweet sense of humour and a desire for peace. Adopted by animal-lover Stephanie, Number 5 settles into a comfortable everyday routine – but can he escape being reclaimed by the army, the fate he dreads more than anything else? The answer can be found in this ever-popular, incredibly sweet-natured sci-fi comedy.

Fascinating facts

This film was originally conceived as a dark high-tech thriller. Number 5 was originally intended to be the villain of the picture: an out-of-control, heavily-armed military robot that had escaped from the lab that had developed him. After several script revisions, the darker elements were toned down and the film became a high-tech comedy.

The budget of Short Circuit was kept deliberately low by the film-makers so that they could spend as much money as possible on perfecting Number 5.
