There have been dozens of movie and TV versions of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol but none is better than this spooky, black-and-white 1951 film starring the great Scottish actor Alastair Sim. Sim is perfect as Scrooge, and the film's great strength is making sure that the visions the tightfisted company boss sees on Christmas Eve are scary enough to make a bad man consider changing his ways.

Scrooge was a nasty man who hated christmas. One christmas eve he had some strange visitors. It was a bit scarey but I still liked it.

I would give it five stars.

Fascinating facts

In the 1950's a New York TV channel broadcast this film continuously all evening and all night until Christmas morning under the title 'A Christmas Carol'

Scrooge was the first film in which Alastair Sim starred alongside the young London actor George Cole – who played the younger Ebeneezer Scrooge. Sim went on to become a professional mentor to Cole, and the two would appear in eleven films together. Now, Cole is still chiefly famous for starring as the loveable rogue Arthur Daley in the long-running 80s TV series Minder.
