Not the Al Pacino film that what seems like every big name in hip-hop is obsessed with - but the equally good 1932 original that the later version was a (very) loose remake of. Set during the era of “Prohibition” when alcohol was illegal in the US, it follows the rise of the ruthless Tony Carmonte through the ranks of Chicago’s crime organisation. But for audiences at the time, the title was a giveaway that the film was really based on the life of America’s most famous gangster – “Scarface” Al Capone.

Fascinating facts

It took two years for the film to get past the censors – with the movie’s full title being extended to “Scarface: The Shame of the Nation” to make it clear that the gangster was not meant to be a hero.
