The French director Chris Marker is little different to most other film-makers – for instance, his most famous work, La Jetée, is made up from still photographs. His later movie, Sans Soleil is not a drama, and not exactly a documentary either - instead, it’s a collection of short filmed moments from around the world, ranging from children walking in the Icelandic countryside to commuters crammed into a Japanese train, all loosely connected by the narration. Even if it doesn’t have a conventional storyline, the film as a whole looks great, and proves truly hypnotic.

Fascinating facts
Like its predecessor La Jetée, Sans Soleil pays tribute to Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo at several different moments - a film that Chris Marker has admitted to being obsessed by.
