Sanjuro is the sequel to the much-loved Yojimbo – and is just as much of a treat for lovers of samurai movies. An essentially light-hearted film, but one that still features plenty of thrilling swordfights, the story finds the scruffy and cynical Sanjuro (played by the brilliant Toshiro Mifune) taking a group of naive young samurai under his wing as he teaches them the way of the ronin. Soon enough, the whole crew are called into action to save an honest official and his family from kidnappers – and it’s now that the lessons Sanjuro has been teaching his young apprentices really begin to come into their own!

Fascinating facts
Mutsuta's wife is shown to have what appears to be blackened teeth. This was a common type of fashion, especially with Courtiers in the Imperial Court.
Although Sanjuro star Toshiro Mifune was born in China to Japanese parents, he never visited Japan until he was 21.
