There are several famous highwaymen dotted throughout history – Dick Turpin, Ned Kelly and, er, Will and Ronnie, also known as the Clown and Wolfman, two aimless young lads from Edinburgh who decide to try life as outlaws. The story begins when the pair of amiable losers decide to use some of the equipment from the joke shop Ronnie works at (including a pair of novelty masks) to start holding up coaches full of tourists in the picturesque Scottish highlands. But what starts out as a money-making prank soon spins out of control when they give away much of their bounty, the world’s media find out, and the pair become the most wanted criminals in the country. The result is a charming and incredibly likeable comedy-drama.

Fascinating facts

A treat for lovers of the Scottish countryside, and an effective career spur for director Michael Hoffman, who went on to make more sophisticated comedies in Hollywood. The score is by Stuart Adamson of rock band Big Country.
