This classic French film may be in black and white, but the issues it deals with are not. It’s a complex and intriguing character study that was inspired by the legendary novel Crime and Punishment. Michel the pickpocket steals because of a strange compulsion - he is remote and arrogant, believing that a “superior” criminal should be above the law. The movie focuses not on the material gain a life of crime might bring, but on the spiritual emptiness that might drive a person to seek sensation through wrongdoing.
