In this “slice of life” from early 1980s Britain, we meet the various members of an ordinary London family, struggling with the reality of living in a country where unemployment was soaring and the future looked anything but rosy. For a start, there’s the painfully shy Colin, his far more self-confident older brother Mark and Coxy, Mark’s skinhead mate – and that’s before we get to the rest of the family, all of who are stuck on the dole and mostly all living in the same cramped council flat. But don’t get the idea that the film is depressing – there’s a rich vein of humour that runs the whole way through the story and makes it highly watchable even as it portrays a time when much of the country seemed to be coming apart at the seams.
