Legendary songbird Edith Piaf was a cultural icon in her native France. However, as this lengthy biopic explores in fractured, mosaic style, her musical success was born from a life of heartache. Neglected by her mother, Edith’s upbringing is shared between her brothel-running grandmother and her travelling acrobat dad. It’s while she’s singing on the streets that an ill-fated Paris nightclub owner discovers her vocal talents and sets her on the road to fame. Yet even when the “Little Sparrow” hits the big time, her life is tainted by tragedy.
