The Paris of picture-postcards may as well be a different planet to the city portrayed in La Haine (Hate). Presenting the French capital as a place of violence and injustice, this is a fast and frantic tale of 24 hours in the lives of three friends from the ghettos that fill the city's suburbs. A fourth friend has been beaten up in police custody, and now lies in a coma - and when the hot-headed Vinz finds a gun lost by a policeman in the course of a riot, it sets off a chain of events that no-one can control.
