Iconic adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic Gothic horror novel that sprang from the darkly witty imagination of director James Whale. Unrecognisable beneath his make up, Boris Karloff gives an astonishingly sympathetic performance as the misunderstood monster who is hounded through the fog and graveyards of a gleefully skewed Transylvania. Whale ensures that there are plenty of mordant laughs, but the scares were genuinely shocking in their day and helped kick-start the golden age of Universal horror. A macabre masterpiece.
