Sci-fi noir came to the movies almost 20 years before the famous Blade Runner with this futuristic French classic. Hardboiled detective Lemmy Caution lands on a strange planet, where the city of Alphaville is being ruled by a totalitarian super-computer, and love and free thought are punishable by death. Can Lemmy, complete with dame, save the day? Star Eddie Constantine plays the Philip Marlowe-esque hero dead straight as writer/director Jean-Luc Godard (one of the founders of the French “New Wave”) gleefully mashes-up genres at the same time as making serious points about the dangers of state control.

Fascinating facts

Despite the fact that the film is a work of science fiction and supposed to be in a city of the future, all the sets were existing locations in Paris in 1965, and all the weapons are conventional firearms.

Despite appearances, the futuristic city of Alphaville was not a set - everything was filmed on location in Paris.
