If there’s a contentious political issue out there, then director Ken Loach has probably tackled in one of his films - often using non-professional actors to avoid conventional movie moods. At their best, his films do feel like snatches of real life put on screen, and there’s plenty of that in this excellent account of the relationship between a man from a Pakistani family and a woman from the Irish Catholic community in Glasgow. Far from being just another Romeo and Juliet-type story, this a warm love story placed in the context of Britain’s very complex racial and religious tensions.
