This gorgeous Technicolor fantasy is one of the most beautiful films ever made in Britain - and one of the best. When a World War II pilot bails out of his plane without a parachute, he seems certain to die. But a heavenly messenger has made a mistake, and the airman miraculously survives – only to find that Heaven doesn’t give up so easily. Combining comedy, romance and drama, this much-loved film from director Michael Powell puts the emphasis on celebrating life over fearing death, an important message for an audience that was then newly emerged from a terrible war.
